Recent discoveries have shown us that an important part of the east Mediterranean offshore regional areas are located between north west & south of the island of Crete, south of Cyprus, Israel & offshore Lebanon was for several tenth’s of million years part of Tethys sea.
For this reason important geological analogies could be present into these areas leading to Oil & Gas sandstone gas field discoveries & gas field reservoir targets. Apart these sandstone reservoirs play, very recently a new limestone reservoir play emerged thanks to ENI’s supergiant biogenic natural gas discovery, the “Zohr” gas field.
These new play lead not only to a great commercial success but also to a scientific one, in the sense that has shown us possible presence of further new giant exploration biogenic gas targets in the same East Mediterranean region. (see Fig. 1)
