Geothermal Developments in Greece – Country Update 2010-2014

Neo Erasmio 4,2 ha greenhouse units, in geothermal field east of Nestos River, Thrace.

The paper gives a brief summary of the direct geothermal uses in Greece. Greece is rich in geothermal resources and has a long history of bathing for therapeutic purposes. Currently, nogeothermal electricity is produced in Greece, despite the fact that a pilot 2 MWe power plant was built and operated for about two years in the 1980s in Milos Island.

The installed capacity of direct uses at the end of 2013 is estimated at about 220 MWt, showing a significant increase compared with the figures presented in WGC2010. However, this increase is almost exclusively attributed to the growth of the geothermal heat pump sector, whereas the other uses are rather static.
